Most of us have heard of ways to save money on electricity. Installing a solar unit for your roof and buying energy-efficient appliances are two popular means of reducing your PECO electric bill. These large-scale improvements can cost a lot of money, though. If you’re looking to save money on electricity without breaking the bank, here are a few little-known tips that will lower your bill and make Mother Nature smile.

Choose Your Energy Provider

A new movement in many states throughout the country is called electricity deregulation. In a nutshell, electricity deregulation lets the homeowner choose his or her energy supplier and the price they’re willing to pay for electricity. Prior to electricity deregulation, homeowners had just one choice – their local utility company.

Electricity deregulation opens the industry and allows for more competition among private energy suppliers, and that equals more savings for homeowners.

Enhance Energy Efficiency in Your Home

Another great way to save money on your PECO electric bill is to increase energy efficiency in your home. You can do this by taking the following three actions.

*  Regularly Inspect Appliances: Like all machines, home appliances, including heat pumps and AC units, should be inspected every year. A leak in an air duct, for instance, can drastically reduce a unit’s efficiency and cost a PA homeowner extra cash.

*  Clean Filters: We all want to inhale clean air in our home, and blocked air filters make a unit work much harder to filter air pollutants.

A super-cheap but helpful way to save money on electricity in your Pennsylvania home is by replacing your filters.

*  Purchase AC Units that are the Correct Size: If your home is on the small side, you’re better off purchasing a modest air conditioning unit that won’t overpower the space. There’s no need to expend unnecessary electricity to power a unit too large for your home.

*  Seal Windows and Doors: Poor insulation always results in decreased efficiency. With this awareness, we should all take the basic steps to properly seal any cracks along door and window frames. Why continue to waste the cold or warm air that’s costing money?

When You’re Sleeping, Put Your PC to Sleep

There is a long-running debate over whether or not to turn off your computer when it’s not in use. Some skeptics claim that repeatedly turning your computer on and off can harm the machine, despite studies showing that turning off your computer at night actually extends the computer’s life.

If you still don’t want to turn off your computer at night, there is a compromise. Nowadays, many computers have a sleep mode that uses much less power than the normal mode. Using the hibernate mode can save over 75 dollars a year on electricity.

To save the most energy, turn off and unplug your computer when it’s not in use.

For a long time I’ve been hearing and reading that home electrical devices, even though not used, when plugged in, still draw a lot of energy. I didn’t quite understand that concept until one day I set out to put it to a test.

At that time, my electrical bill was around 2 every month.

I made an inventory of every electrical device in my house that was plugged into an electrical outlet all day and night.

So, on the day of my next billing cycle, and thereafter, I started doing the following:

I unplugged two table lamps that were rarely used and plug them in only when needed.

I would unplug two baby monitors when not in use.

I would unplug two night lights during the day.

I combined the TV, DVD, TV Digital Box, and all other entertainment devices and plugged them into one surge protector with enough outlets to fit them all.

When not in use, and overnight, all I had to unplug was one cord and they all were off.

I combined the computer, printer, modem, and all other computer related devices same way as the TV gadgets and unplug them all when not in use.

I would make sure coffeemaker, toaster or other kitchen devices were unplugged when not in use.

Also, every time we would leave the house, I’ll do a final walk-around to make sure there was no forgotten light on, and all of the above were unplugged.

After doing this meticulously every single day, my next month electrical bill was .

Six months later, I’m still doing this every single day and my electrical bill is floating around every month. That is of savings every month.

For earth day, it was suggested to turn off all lights to save the planet.

My wife tells me that I do “earth day” every single day.

Now that you can see how to lower your electrical bill, you can save some money and save the planet. Go for it!

1- Purchase a programmable thermostat. They are cheaper than you might think, and they can reduce up to 30% on your heating and cooling costs. They work harder when family members are home and keep the house a bit less heated or cooled when they are not. You can program your air conditioning, for example, to stay at 80 degrees from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Switch it down to 76 degrees right before you get home from work.

2 – Buy ceiling fans, especially for stuffy or poorly ventilated rooms.

Fans make the room feel cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. They are very low-cost to own and operate.

3 –  Buy CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) light bulbs. They use 75% less energy than normal light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. They are a little more expensive initially, but the energy cost savings and longevity are worth the initial outlay.

4 - Choose Energy Star appliances when you upgrade your stove, refrigerator, hot water heater, etc. Older appliances are energy-sucking monsters, so when the time comes to replace them, you can see a substantial energy savings.

5 – Get a hot water heater “jacket.” These insulating wraps that go around the outside of your water heater help keep the water temperature higher, especially in the winter, thus reducing how hard your heater has to work and the resulting energy costs.

Consider turning down the temperature on your hot water heater or purchase a newer “tankless” water heater, which uses less energy than the standard models.

6- Be careful about the energy that you consume. Turn off lights and other appliances when you are not using them. Use dimmers or lower wattage light bulbs. Air dry your clothes. Use a toaster oven instead of heating up the regular oven for small items.

7 – Become solar-friendly. Use skylights, open windows instead of turning on lights and consider installing solar panels.

Homeowners are often looking for a way to reduce bills and renewable energy is a good starting point. It provides electricity for your home, free of charge besides the initial purchase and maintenance. On a large scale, we use wind farms to power cities and towns, but on a personal scale, we can generate a lot of electricity with wind turbines and solar panels. They both have pros and cons and can be suitable for different people. Here’s how to save on electric bill by putting renewable energy into use.Wind PowerThe giant wind turbines on top of hills are very effective and produce megawatts of power and the ones we use for our home are simply smaller replicas of said device. A mast-mounted turbine can produce up to 6kW for your home, while a roof-mounted turbine can produce 2kW. This is far in excess of many solar panels and the additional or all of the electricity can be sold to an electrical company for profit. However, due to the design of the turbine, several issues can crop up. First of all, it has moving parts. This means noise, maintenance and the chance it might break. The noise is aesthetically displeasing, as might be the visual side of it for some people, meaning permission should be sought prior to purchase and installation. The maintenance side can become expensive, especially if you’re untrained and need to call out a qualified engineer for maintenance and repairs. The downtime of the repairs can lead to increased costs.Solar PowerUsing sunlight, we can create usable electricity using solar panels. They have different advantages and disadvantages in comparison to their counterparts, the wind turbines. They have no moving parts, therefore they require little maintenance and can last up to several decades with good care.Due to the way they work, they can function even on a cloudy day and due to their profile, they’re more aesthetically pleasing and operate silently. However, their productivity is no match for a wind turbine and many solar panels are required to power an entire home, meaning larger initial costs. I have personally managed to build my own home DIY renewable energy system by following an online system which you can find out more about at my website link below.

With a little diligence we can easily lower our electric bill. We all want to save money everywhere we can. By doing so we reduce our carbon footprint to make Mother earth happy and reduce our utility bill to make our own Mothers happy.

Because of a recent law passed by Congress, all light bulbs sold will be replaced by compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). Whether you like CFL’s lighting or not you will be forced to save on electric by using these very efficient bulbs. I argue, why wait until the moratorium, start today by replacing all the bulbs in your house or office.

The one downside to CFL’s is after years have gone by, when they expire, they require special care of disposing them. They hold very small amounts of Mercery that simply can not be thrown into a landfill. The original concern of reducing a carbon footprint will not be achieved unless the CFL’s are disposed safely.

Here are at least 5 ways to save on your electric bill and please Mother.

1. Reduce Your Consumption – Duh? I know you have heard that one before. But it needs to be said because it is a great practical way to get started. Turn off all lights and appliances when they are not in use. Become aware of all the power eaters that continue to suck energy when they are off (e.g. TVs, computers, multimedia equipment even your cell phone charger).Use power strips that you control, remember to turn those off when not in use. If you have air conditioning set the thermostat a few degrees warmer, set your heating unit a few degrees cooler. Use natural cooling whenever possible in summer and put on more layers of clothes in winter.

2. Invest in Energy Saver Appliances and Equipment – The Energy Saver label means that this appliance meets federal standards for energy efficiency. Talk to your cpa about the tax incentives the government provides for energy saving appliances and equipment.

3. Look Into Interruptible Electric Service Rates – Your local utility supplier may offer discounts on your electric rates if you sign up and agree to interruptible service. During peak electric load times (such as hot summer) your electric company can reduce its load by interrupting your electric service. Check into this option with your electric company to see if this option is right for you.

4. Time-of-Use Rates Offered by Your Power Company – This may work with households that are home mostly on weekends or in (off-Peak) evening times. Be sure you completely understand the terms before signing up. By not understanding what you are agreeing to you could end up paying more than if you did not sign up a all.

5. Convert to Solar Energy and Wind Power – The resource is clean and completely free. But installing the systems professionally are costly. There are federal and state tax incentives for converting to solar and wind which will help. The good news is that you can build a small system yourself with plans you purchase. If you enjoy doing things yourself, it is a match made in heaven. You could learn to create enough energy to run a small home, garden or workshop appliances. It will be fun to learn how to save electricity and it serves a great cause to reduce our carbon footprint.

There are lots of ways on how to save money on electricity bill. All it takes is a little effort and some plain common sense on our part. For starters, the best way to save on electricity is to focus on the biggest energy users in your home, which are the air conditioner, the refrigerator and your home lighting fixtures. Optimize the use of these appliances and you’ll see a noteworthy drop on your electric bill.

Air conditioner – Install an aircon that is suited for the space that requires cooling. Talk to your local appliance technician to know the right specifications for you. Whenever possible, turn the aircon off and simply open the windows and use an electric fan to circulate the air in your room and reduce the heat.

Refrigerator – The location of your fridge can make a difference in how energy efficient it is.

Make sure it is out of direct sunlight and not close to the oven. It is best to keep it against an outside wall so that the heat it generates can escape easily, and always make sure that there is a few inches space all around the fridge so that air can circulate.

Home lighting fixtures – In most homes, about 10-15% of the electricity bill is for lighting, and so energy saving light bulbs can cut your costs considerably. Traditional bulbs waste a lot of energy by turning it into heat. Energy saving bulbs, on the other hand, work in the same way as fluorescent lights in that the tubes coating glows brightly as an electric current passed through gas in the tube.

Another way on how to save money on electricity bill is to unplug your appliances when not in use, especially televisions, computers, and VCR’s. Simply turning them off is not enough because these items still use electricity when on standby mode. In other words, do not leave electrical appliances on standby.

First: What is renewable energy?

Simply put, renewable energy is energy sources that can be replenished in a short period of time. It used to be the only source of energy we had available. Generations ago, the united states was supplied almost entirely by renewable energy in the form of wood. The most often used renewable energy sources are:

Renewable power sources have become an excellent replacement for our dwindling fossil fuel supplies. By turning to a source of energy that isn’t finite, we’ve begun reducing the chance of a global electricity-shortage and the issues that would follow afterwards. For homeowners, they can begin their own trek into the renewable energy court by having their own systems installed. Here is how to save on electric bill with a couple of renewable energy power systems.

Wind Turbines

Simply miniature replicas of the giant wind turbines up on the hills, home turbines can produce a good deal of power, depending on the model. Roof-mounted turbines are less productive at a maximum of 2kW, whereas mast-mounted turbines can produce up to 6kW.

This huge production of power in comparison to others, such as solar panels, is great and they can even be connected to the power grid so you can sell the electricity back to a electrical company.

However, there are a number of disadvantages. The first is that it has multiple moving parts and therefore requires regular maintenance. This means downtime and maybe a considerable amount if it breaks and needs replacement parts. Furthermore, there may be noise and for many homeowners, or their neighbors, turbines look unsightly. Permission of anyone affected might be necessary before having one installed.

Solar Panels

Utilizing the sun’s rays, solar panels provide usable electricity without the hassle of moving parts or regular, expensive maintenance. It’s completely silent and has a low profile, meaning there’s very little in the way of aesthetic issues. Additionally, the lack of moving parts and with regular maintenance, solar panels can last for decades and are productive even on cloudy days.

However, they produce a lot less electricity than a wind turbine and can be very expensive towards the high-end and for larger panels. I have personally managed to build my own home DIY renewable energy system by following an online system which you can find out more about at my website link below.
